I was delightedly surprised to find it a very serious look at an alternative history. It is in to the author's credit, that one can read what on the face, seems like an absurd premise, and end the book thinking that that absurd premise could actually be reality.
The book seriously posits history, if Abraham Lincoln had been a vampire hunter. The author so skillfully weaves historical records, with his fictional narrative, that it can be difficult to pick out which is which.
The author doesn't deviate from the standard story of Lincoln, from his days as a lawyer, to getting involved in politics, to winning the presidency, and to ultimately being assassinated in Ford's Theater.
What the author does instead, is flesh out the standard story, filling in the details as to how and why Lincoln became a vampire hunter, and how his hatred of vampires compelled him to fight against slavery.
And just as the US was divided, with the North fighting against the South, we learn that vampires are divided, into a good camp that wants to coexist peacefully with humankind relatively The author subtly points out the parallels between vampires who kill and feed off of humans, and slave-owners who live off of the work and pain of others.
The one unbelievable part of the book, was Henry's Lincoln's best vampire friend reaction to Lincoln's death, I felt it did not fit the character of Henry, as it had been developed throughout the rest of the book.
I did watch the movie, after reading the book, and while the basic story line is the same, there are significant differences, I found both enjoyable.
I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and had a few giggles, I however wasn't so impressed with that book, mainly because it seemed like Seth Grahame-Smith just tossed a few zombies and action into an otherwise flawless book.
Maybe I was too bias, because I love the original so dearly. It is in my forever top I'm on my 4th paperback version of Pride and Prejudice and I have it on Kindle too, just in case.
Tongue in cheek and not to gory. Since Tim Burton is involved in the movie, reading the book became a must for me. I have to say I adore anything Tim Burton.
But I digress. The book starts with a little bit about the author and how he came to read the secret diaries of Abraham Lincoln's life and his vocation to rid America of vampires.
I won't go into details as I don't want to spoil the readers enjoyment. The book is well written, you get an insight to Abraham Lincoln and the times he lived in.
You can see throughout the story how this remarkable man was shaped by loses, by meeting certain people, by events but most of by love for "his" country.
As a non-American I have read some about the civil war, but Abraham Lincoln never really struck me as a person who was all that interesting.
It took me no time to read this book, I found it a fascinating way of seeing history unfold through the eyes of Abraham Lincoln as translated by Seth Grahame-Smith I like that the author picked Abraham Lincoln as the Buffy the Vampire-slayer of the 's.
Somehow it just fits. It works. And it works well. Also the photos throughout the book are again fitting and fun. I give it 5 stars, because when I was done reading it, I wanted to pick it up and read it again.
Only good books make me feel that way. I can't wait to see what Seth Grahame-Smith comes up with next. Such a fun read!! I cannot stress how much I enjoyed this book.
I am new to this sort of horror quasi-historical genre but needless to say I was so impressed with the author's flair and style. The prose just seems to flow right off the page and puts the reader right there in pre-civil war America.
I am not a historical buff nor an expert on the civil war so appreciated the time and research that the author put in. Abraham Lincoln declares war on vampires that have moved from Europe to the US where they presume that they will be safer and more accepted.
So the book follows Honest Abe and his friend Henry the wealthy, mysterious patron and front man for the the hidden society called, the Union.
Abe struggles with his relationship with his father with the harsh economic times of the nation and the growing rift between the north and south.
So not only do you get a really good vampire book, you also get some interesting history lessons about the civil war and the great man that was Abraham Lincoln.
You also get some great pseudo authentic photographic proof of vampires that existed during the s. This is a fast read and one that I could not put down!!!
If you're lucky you will get a sneak preview of the sequel The Last American Vampire. Hope you enjoy it! Oh last thing.
I made the mistake of watching the movie before I read the book. What a mistake. I know it goes without saying but the book was so much better then e movie.

Rather it is presented as a factual biography, with the addition of vampires at key moments. Despite the lack of humour, it really works. Henry then decides to train Humans to kill Vampires.
One of these Humans was Abraham Lincoln who became President and tried to abolish slavery. The South retaliated, but was losing many battles.
Adam approached Lincoln, asking him where the silver was. Lincoln replied by wrapping his silver pocket-watch around his fist and ramming it into Adam's stomach.
Adam fell back onto the tracks, wounded. The train then collapsed onto him, crushing him and destroying the railroad. Sign In Don't have an account?
